Adaptation project

The Narkomfin Foundation together with «Ginzburg Architects» (run by Moisei Ginzburg's grandson, Alexei) has drafted up a proposal for the adaptation of the Narkomfin complex for contemporary use. The proposal strives for the maximum conservation of the original building (including its original appearance, internal structure, original materials, building technologies, surroundings and functions). After restoration the building will be used on a non-commercial basis for the work of the Narkomfin Foundation and other charities founded by MIAN companies, such as The Cherished Dream Foundation.

According to the proposal, the main block will conserve its residential function and, as originally intended by Moisei Ginzburg, public functions will be concentrated in the utilities block which will house a conference hall, business centre and dining hall, giving the Narkomfin Foundation the possibility to hold non-commercial events. In the summer months a café will open on the flat roof.

A few of the living apartments will be made into a museum: here in recreated late 1920s interiors, will be an exhibition dedicated to the creators of Narkomfin and the history of the building.

To provide public and invalid access the question of adding a lift to the building is being discussed (the present internal lift which was added in the 1930s distorts the western façade of the building and is to be removed). A car park may be added in the dip behind the building. The necessary areas for Narkomfin's services will be housed in the basement of the residential block. The question of restoring the park in front of the house is also being discussed.
